Abstract:
Classical economics and the generations of subsequent economists view human beings as rational, self-interested actors who strive to maximize pleasure while simultaneously expending as few resources as possible, and view the world as one of natural order that co-arises with self-interest and then benefits humankind. Classical Economics contains this essential human nature and corresponding nature of the world without naming these as such, and contemporary economists reify these claims, that lie beyond the discipline of economics, and further take their objectivity, and absoluteness for granted. While economics performs a great deal of empirical study, some of its tenants are put forth based on faith, or not put forth based on evidence, or the evidence that the site is highly selective it brings forth a very particular view of human nature and of the world. The persistence of bubbles suggests that economics cannot be regarded strictly as science. The discipline uses scientific observation, and quantified data, yet the economists’ assertions lead to disparities, bubbles.
While Economics is not a discrete religion, it bears a number of similar characteristics that religious studies is uniquely equipped to illuminate. This lens ought not be the exclusive means of studying economics, but is rather complimentary. Failure to utilize this lens allows economics’ religious claims as to the nature of the self, the world, and reality to go uncontested. We must examine these claims through the religious studies lens because the “theology” of economics wields incredible influence upon our perception of humanity and the world. May we examine economics claims that if are not “religious,” are certainly beyond the discipline. May this facilitate fruitful dialogue between economics and religious studies, to disrupt the assumption that economics holds some kind of glorified objectivity, or absolute view of reality and human nature.
