The Buddhist Philosophical tradition places unique emphasis on epistemology. Much of the evidence for and examination of epistemology within the Buddhist traditions arises from meditation. One might think of it as the oldest laboratory for empirical observation. One directs this observation to phenomenon observed, and the subject who observes. Observation is crucial in order to begin to notice what is the basis for making a claim? Why does one think anything rather than something else? In order to ask any question, and propose any meaningful answer, one must first notice what is happening. Or notice what is NOT happening.
